The opening ceremony will be followed by a youth basketball clinic hosted by Giants of Africa coaches.

Giants of Africa - a non-profit sports association - travels the African continent organizing basketball camps for boys and girls, building land and facilitating awareness-raising initiatives to empower young people across Africa.

The Kimisagara Youth Centre (formerly Kimisagara Youth Centre) was launched in 1995 after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi as a shelter for children in the Kimisagara area, Nyarugenge district, Kigali city.

Since 2011, the government has provided the centre with more programs to help children.

Managed by the Ministry of Youth, the centre is a one-stop shop for youth employment and production whose mission is to improve youth growth and competitiveness.

The centre receives at least 600 young people every day for different programs.

The centre has various sports facilities, including football, basketball and handball fields, as well as a gymnasium used during the rainy season, according to the programme manager of the Kimisagara Youth Centre in Rwanda, Tadeo Talemwa.

“Sports facilities entertain young people especially during the holidays. They spend time playing instead of being immersed in bad behavior.

That’s why Giants of Africa supported us in renovating the basketball court into a modern facility that will be unveiled on August 19. This basketball court will attract more young people to basketball,” he said.

He said the center has produced many players for many teams at the national level.

The center generally offers various services, including ICT training, apprenticeship program, professional training, sports, dance/art, talent development, volunteering courses, civic education and patriotism, an information office on HIV/AIDS, family planning and life skills, English, French, Chinese, Korean and Swahili language training, music and youth entrepreneurship.

Talemwa explained that vocational training courses are offered to vulnerable youth for six months.

'There are three courses, namely sewing, hairdressing and beauty, and hospitality, which include hotel management, customer service and culinary arts. They get certificates that help them get or create a job,” he said.

He said the detection and promotion of talent targets different youth associations with a focus on skating, boxing, singing, modern and traditional dance.

"Those who are grouped into modern and traditional dance associations are already earning income by performing at weddings and other ceremonies every weekend," Talemwa said.

The centre’s health department also provides sexual and reproductive health education.

Talemwa said that when it comes to ICT skills, the centre trains different young people at all levels.

He said that young people are also educated on other programs such as good governance, patriotism, volunteerism among others.

"The centre has large rooms that can host large community and local government meetings," he said.

The centre also has a workstation with computers connected to the Internet.
